What is it? Patchouli (pogostemom cabin) is a perennial bushy herb that grows up to about 3 ft. high. It has a sturdy, hairy stem, large fragrant leaves and white flowers tinged with purple. Patchouli is native to tropical Asia, particularly Indonesia and the Phillipines. Historically in China and Japan the herb has been used to treat various illnesses including colds, headaches and nausea. In Japan and Malaysia it has also been used as a poison snake bite antitdote. It was first known in Europe from it's association with shawls imported from India. The exotic shawls were packed in patchouli leaves to ward off insects and the scent became well-known and even a proof of authenticity. Of course, eventually, enterprising merchants began scenting their homespun shawls with patchouli and passing them off as true imported fabrics. And why should I care? Patchouli is a member of the Labiatae family which have been called Plants of Heat. From an aromatherapy viewpoint their fragrance is invigorating, stimulating, fiery and reawakening. Continuing that line of thought, Patchouli is rejuvenating to the skin and tissues. (There, I thought that might get your attention!) It has been known to be very effective for eczema, dermatitis, aged skin, dry and cracked skin and wrinkles. Patchouli is effective as an insect repellant, (remember the shawls) and is very useful when dealing with stress. It has also enjoyed a reputation as an aphrodisiac. |

Exfoliating can give you gleaming, healthy skin in a very short amount of time. It can make your skin look and feel younger. Exfoliating can help eliminate toxins out of your system (a contributing factor to cellulite) by increasing the blood and lymphatic circulation. In short exfoliating is a way of giving your skin a pep-talk with guaranteed results. There are a variety of methods that you can use to exfoliate. Even just using a washcloth on your face is a gentle exfoliant. Other methods include dry brushing with a bristle brush, rubbing with a loofah or sponge and using a salt or sugar scrub. Start out gently and let your skin become accustomed to the friction. Do not be overly rough and you can exfoliate on a daily basis. As your skin becomes used to the treatment you can up the level of abrasiveness that you are using. Establish a regular routine for exfoliating your skin and you will be amazed at how healthy and glowing you and your skin will become. |
